Democrat Delegate Under Fire
House Republicans are preparing a resolution to censure Delegate Stacey Plaskett of the U.S. Virgin Islands after newly released documents revealed she exchanged text messages with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during a February 2019 congressional hearing.
The communications came to light through Epstein estate materials and show Epstein providing suggested lines of questioning to Plaskett as she prepared to interrogate former Trump attorney Michael Cohen.
Republican lawmakers argue that a sitting member of Congress taking input from a convicted sex offender during an active hearing represents a serious breach of ethics and institutional integrity. Some members have also raised the possibility of removing Plaskett from the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
Key Details of the Epstein Texts
The documents reportedly show Epstein advising Plaskett on which directions to pursue in her questioning. One of the messages indicated that Epstein believed Cohen’s testimony opened the door for additional questions regarding Trump Organization personnel. Plaskett allegedly responded that she was aware and prepared to act on the suggestion.
Plaskett’s office issued a statement asserting that she regularly receives texts from staff, constituents, and members of the public during hearings. She acknowledged receiving Epstein’s messages but stated that they had no bearing on her conduct as a former prosecutor attempting to uncover truth. Her statement emphasized her long-standing advocacy against sexual assault, exploitation, and trafficking.
Escalating Political Fallout
Republicans claim Plaskett’s communication with Epstein — even if unsolicited — creates a perception problem that cannot be ignored. GOP House members have stated that coordinating, accepting input, or even passively engaging with a convicted sex offender during a congressional hearing is unacceptable.
The expected censure resolution may be introduced as a privileged measure, requiring the House to schedule a vote within two legislative days. Some members are also pushing for her removal from committee assignments, arguing that her position on the Intelligence Committee demands unimpeachable judgment.
Democratic leadership has remained largely quiet on the matter despite the party’s long-standing public focus on Epstein’s connections to high-profile individuals.
Why This Matters
This controversy raises questions about congressional ethics, transparency, and the handling of communications from outside actors during sensitive hearings.
If a member of Congress knowingly or unknowingly engages in real-time communication with a convicted criminal while performing official duties, it undermines public trust. It also reveals inconsistencies in how political parties respond to Epstein-related revelations depending on who is implicated.
What Happens Next
- A House censure vote may occur within days.
- Committee removal proposals could follow depending on the final text of the resolution.
- The controversy may prompt further releases of Epstein-related documents.
- The episode may force both parties to clarify their standards for conduct during hearings.
Editorial Closure
Congress cannot claim to uphold integrity while members privately exchange messages with a convicted predator during live oversight hearings. If this situation involved a Republican, Democrats would demand immediate accountability. The same standard must apply across the board. Institutions only survive when ethics are not selectively enforced.
