New Evidence of Coordination
Two newly surfaced congressional letters show that the January 6th Select Committee shared evidence with Jack Smith. This committee, chaired by Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) with Vice Chair Liz Cheney (R-WY), directly coordinated with Special Counsel Jack Smith’s office. Both were investigating former President Donald Trump.
The letters, dated December 5, 2022, and December 9, 2022, reveal that the Committee actively transmitted evidence, interview transcripts, and private communications to Smith’s office at the Department of Justice (DOJ).
In the December 5 letter, Thompson and Cheney informed Smith that the Committee was concluding its investigation. They would begin producing 16 interview and deposition transcripts “along with the exhibits associated with those transcripts.” The communication explicitly stated that the Committee would continue to provide additional evidence as it became available.
Four days later, in the December 9 follow-up, Thompson and Cheney detailed that the Committee was now sending emails, text messages, and documents obtained from Trump-allied attorney Dr. John Eastman and former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. The letter further noted that the Committee had created a “staff-created spreadsheet” summarizing texts and privilege logs from Meadows. Furthermore, names linked to some phone numbers were determined using “publicly available information.” Interestingly, this shows how the J6 Committee shared significant evidence with Jack Smith.
Both letters were addressed to Jack Smith, Special Counsel, U.S. Department of Justice. This indicates that the Select Committee was not merely performing congressional oversight. They were actively funneling investigatory material to a DOJ prosecutor targeting Trump and his associates.
The Partisan Reality
While the Committee claimed its purpose was fact-finding, these letters underscore a coordination pipeline. This existed between a Democrat-led congressional panel and the Biden DOJ’s special counsel, raising legitimate concerns about separation of powers and due process.
The correspondence also undercuts prior public statements by Committee members suggesting their probe was “independent.” Notably, both letters were sent in the weeks immediately preceding the Committee’s final public hearings. Meanwhile, the DOJ was accelerating its case preparation.
In effect, the Thompson-Cheney Committee acted as an auxiliary evidence collector for Jack Smith’s office. They were selectively transmitting witness transcripts, private communications, and materials. These actions reinforced the Special Counsel’s ongoing case narrative against Trump.
